Life at ankle height

In a post earlier this fall I said I live in a place where people come look at the sky; and its true, Lapland is famous for its amazing northern lights. Can you believe some people come here for just a brief 48 hrs to catch a glimpse of Christmas, snow and hopefully the Aurora!

It is thus ironic perhaps that I point my gaze at the ground most of the year: there are so many great colors, textures and shapes that are just waiting to be noticed at the foot of the trees. No wonder contemporary chefs like Heston Blumenthal are drawing their inspiration from the forest floor; there's a lot to be discovered at ankle height.

Here are so of my favorite shots of life forms that grow at knee height. No doubt many of these colors make it into my color palette for the shawls I weave, not necessarily directly in the form of dying with plants, but more conceptually.

First snow is falling this week so let this be my bye-bye to autumn and looking onward to winter; 've got some great new stuff coming up at the beginning of next year!
